Critical Care

Our board-certified criticalists provide specialty-level treatments and monitoring for pets with life-threatening illness or injury.

Critical Care Service

Much like a human ICU, the Critical Care department at Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital is a dedicated area of our hospital designed and specially equipped for the continuous care of critically ill or injured pets. Our VECCS Level 1 certified unit (one of only 2 in Canada) is open 24/7/365, and is equipped to manage the most serious emergencies, complex post-operative recoveries, and life-threatening conditions. Our critical care team is ready to jump into action should a pet’s condition worsen, or a complication arise.

Board-certified criticalists work with our team of emergency veterinarians and RVTs to provide 24/7 monitoring and advanced interventions such as blood transfusions, oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, endoscopy, and on-site imaging including CT and MRI. After our emergency team stabilizes their illness or injury, these patients are often transferred to the critical care department for continued treatment and monitoring. There, our criticalists oversee a pet’s care to ensure they continue improving and see them through to recovery.

This specialized team also works closely with other departments, such as cardiology, surgery, and oncology, to ensure each patient receives coordinated, expert-level care throughout every stage of recovery.

How to Get a Referral to Our Critical Care Services

There are two ways to get an appointment for specialty care at our hospital:

  1. From your primary veterinarian
A referral ensures the proper transfer of medical information. It is beneficial to your pet and the specialty veterinarian to have all relevant medical information and will help your pet receive appropriate care.
  2. Contact us directly
You are welcome to contact us directly without a referral if you believe your pet would benefit from specialty or behaviour care. However, we believe strongly in working hand-in-hand with your family veterinarian to provide comprehensive care, and if it is possible to provide records or a referral from your family vet, it is helpful. Please contact us at 604-514-8383 or at info@bbvsh.com.

Our Code of Conduct

we love animals

This is a desperate time for you and your loved one. Please, rest assured that everybody in our building will be doing everything in their power to achieve the best possible outcome for your pet.

We have been in your position before and understand how difficult it is.

Respect

We are here to take good care of your pet and we’re committed to establishing trust and mutual respect with our clients, however, please know that abusive language, aggressive behaviour, and lack of respect toward any of our staff members will not be tolerated.

Most Critical First

We prioritize care based on severity, ensuring that the most critically ill patients receive attention first. Upon arrival, your pet will undergo a thorough triage assessment to determine the level of urgency. This process allows us to quickly identify and treat potentially life-threatening conditions.

Pay For Service

Emergency Services aim to diagnose and support your pet during their illness or crisis; however, please recognize that you are paying for the services rendered, not the results achieved. The fees cover time, expertise, and resources dedicated to your pet’s care, regardless of outcome.

If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, come directly to our hospital.

Walk-ins are welcome; no appointment is required.

If you are able, call ahead and let us know you are coming.
