Cardiology

Our board-certified cardiologists use advanced tools and techniques to diagnose and treat diseases of the heart and circulatory system.

Cardiology at Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital

Heart disease in pets is more common than many people realize—affecting an estimated 10% of dogs and 15% of cats, whether diagnosed or not. Early detection and expert care can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life and longevity. In fact, studies show that cardiac patients live 75% longer when their condition is co-managed by a family veterinarian and a board-certified veterinary cardiologist. At Boundary Bay, our cardiologists work closely with your primary care veterinarian to build a treatment plan tailored to your pet.

Our board-certified cardiologists are specialists in diagnosing and treating diseases of the heart and circulatory system. They’ve completed years of additional training and rigorous certification to develop the advanced knowledge needed for evaluating complex cardiac conditions—like heart murmurs, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, congenital heart defects, and more.

Our cardiologists are also available 24/7 to consult with our emergency and critical care teams, ensuring that pets with urgent or complex cardiac needs receive seamless, around-the-clock support. And because we’re a multidisciplinary hospital, your pet benefits from collaborative care that may include specialists in surgery, internal medicine, oncology, and more.

Attention breeders: We are temporarily suspending our OFA certification and HCM breeding scans. If you are interested in organizing your own breed specific clinic, you can send an inquiry to cardiology@bbvsh.com. Approval is subject to availability.

Good news for breeders

Dog breeders (particularly those who breed dobermans and boxers) and handlers of police or search & rescue dogs in BC and Washington, will welcome the availability of a cardiologist for sire, dam and puppy cardiology evaluations.

There are two ways to get an appointment for specialty care at our hospital:

  1. From your primary veterinarian
A referral ensures the proper transfer of medical information. It is beneficial to your pet and the specialty veterinarian to have all relevant medical information and will help your pet receive appropriate care.
  2. Contact us directly
You are welcome to contact us directly without a referral if you believe your pet would benefit from specialty or behaviour care. However, we believe strongly in working hand-in-hand with your family veterinarian to provide comprehensive care, and if it is possible to provide records or a referral from your family vet, it is helpful. Please contact us at 604-514-8383 or at info@bbvsh.com.
